Often these were not specified by early composers; and to make things more difficult, some of the original instruments are not readily available today. The sostenuto pedal, in the middle, is rarely used (and in fact is often missing from upright pianos); it allows the pianist to sustain some tones without sustaining others. Also, just because you have, say, a Fox bassoon, does not mean that you have to use a Fox bocal with it. I've been teaching myself flute-making, and now am moving on to oboes, but I'm much more intimidated by the fingering of an oboe. The reeds offered by Advantage Reeds perform consistently well, under all environmental conditions, and have proven to be reliable. But the returning long note seems to change in color, because each time there is a different dissonant chord below it.
