Open's May 15, 2012. Here's a picture of a nifty lifestyle relic our web guy took.
Wall Photos
One of the nifty relics I discovered at this museum when developing their website. The museum has recently been renovated, and opens May 15. They've got some really cool World War relics, and my favorite, a really old bicycle.

It's a poor picture, but a fun bit of history. I was at the Sturgis High School today and as I was leaving saw this picture tucked away into a corner. It's a picture of the USS Constitution (also known as Old Ironsides). Built in 1797, it saw service in the war of 1812. The frame of this picture was made of wood taken from the keel of the ship when it was overhauled in 1927. The picture and the frame were donated to the school in 1929. History is just out there waiting for us to find it!

The weekend is about here! Saturday and Sunday we'll be out painting at the museum getting everything ready for our opening in May. Bob Kuser, our director, has been hard at work building new display cases and it's starting to look really good! If you are interested in helping some weekend give me (Randy) a call at 605-490-3658.

This should be fun. It's part of the Smithsonian's "Museum on Main Street" at the Sturgis Public Library. Tomorrow (Mar.22, 7pm) is going to be 'The History of the Blues' with guitar masters James Van Nuys and Bob Fahey. It's part of a fun series of concerts sponsored by the South Dakota Humanties Council, The Smithsonian, The Sturgis Area Arts Council, & the Sturgis Public Library. Check this out for more information: http://sturgispubliclibrary.blogspot.com/2012/02/new-harmonies-coming-to-sturgis-public.html (ummmm-you may have to cut & paste that. Still getting all this figured out!)

Pretty excited about this - just got permission from the Harold Lloyd Trust to have a Harold Lloyd Film Festival in September! If you're not familiar with his work you're in for a treat - one of the brilliant comics of the silent pictures!

A little Piece of Fort Meade History has passed on. Mick Roberts used to train and Break horses for the Fort Meade Calvary. Fort Meade was the last Calvary to use horses in the United States He passed away at the age of 91. Mick was also a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. When asked what his key to living so long was..."Just keep workin!'"

Another photo from a Mick Roberts video interview. He was one of the oldest residents of my hometown (Whitewood) and one of the last living survivors of the Battle of the Bulge. Also trained horses for the Fort Meade Calvary(Last Horse Calvary in the Nation) back in the day. He passed away on Tuesday at the age of 91. What a character.
